Product Description
Penguin Pottery’s glazes offer a wide range of effects to choose from, including vivid, bright, smooth, glossy, textured, satin, matte, opaque, semi-opaque, semi-translucent, translucent, flowing, and non-flowing options. Our low fire glazes are ideal for school projects, classrooms, studios, and potters who prefer not to fire at high temperatures. These low fire glazes are the preferred choice for potters seeking a diverse palette of colors such as celadon, vibrant reds, deep greens, and bright blues. In addition, our mid-fire glazes provide similar ranges of colors while introducing unique effects and tonality not found in low fire glazes.
Tips for Achieving Great Results with Our Glazes:
Ensure that you mix the glaze thoroughly before use. Like house paints, ceramic glazes may settle, so it is important to mix them well for at least 1-2 minutes to achieve a smooth consistency.
Choose how to apply the glazes - either by dipping the bisqued piece into the glaze or by brushing it on. Our glazes are ready to apply with a brush, but if you opt for dipping, we recommend using a dispersing agent like Darvan.
Remove all dust from the bisque-fired piece before applying the glaze. Using clean, moist sponges is recommended. Make sure the piece is completely dry before glazing.
Fire the glaze at the correct cone temperature. Ceramic glazes are categorized based on temperature ranges - low-fire, mid-fire, and high-fire. Over-firing can damage the piece or kiln, while under-firing can result in undesirable outcomes.
A Note on Glazing Ceramics:
Experimentation is key when working with ceramics, as different clay bodies, glaze types, and firing methods can produce varying results. Factors like firing temperature, clay body color, kiln heating speed, and oxygen levels in the atmosphere will influence the final appearance of the glaze. Embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the process of discovering unique outcomes!
