Our expert potters in the USA create our lead-free, non-toxic, and food-safe glazes. These mid-fire glazes offer a similar color palette to our low-fire glazes but also introduce unique effects and tonalities when fired in a pottery kiln at cone 5 or cone 6. It is common for glaze contents to settle, but thorough mixing for at least 1-2 minutes is recommended to ensure a smooth application.
Pottery glazes must be fired at the appropriate temperature in a ceramic kiln, not in a kitchen oven. It is essential to calibrate your kiln to confirm it is reaching the target temperature or cone. Glazes are categorized based on firing temperature into low-fire, mid-fire, and high-fire groups. Over-firing can cause damage, while under-firing may result in undesirable outcomes that differ from the swatch image.
The appearance of glazes can vary depending on factors such as firing temperature, the type of clay body used, the kiln's firing speed, and the oxygen level in the atmosphere during firing. Testing before application is recommended to gauge the desired result accurately.
Glazes can be applied by either dipping the bisque-fired piece into the glaze or brushing it on. Our glazes are ready for brush application, but if you prefer dipping, you may use a dispersing agent like Darvan. All Penguin Pottery products are covered by our Lifetime Warranty.
